Edith W. Hilton
May 25, 1936 - March 4, 2021
Edith Wynona Burrell Hilton was born in Kennett Square Chester County, PA, to George and Mary (nee Anderson) Burrell on May 25, 1936. Educated at Kennett Consolidated School, Edith met and married Corporal William Robert Hilton, Sr. on June 18, 1954.
Most of Edith’s life was spent in Delaware County where she and her husband educated seven children, Roberta J. Hilton, William R. Hilton, Jr., Stephen W. Hilton (Caroline), Wynona C. Hilton-Stanley (Theodore), Dorothy C. Hilton, Richard O. Hilton (Yvonne), Carolyn P. Hilton-Finney (Brian).
Edith was very active in the Chester Upland School District, participating in Parent Teacher Organizations in the elementary and middle schools, then eventually at Chester High School. She was proud to serve as a Chester High School Band Parent from 1977 to 1986.
Edith attended Widener University and received her degree from the School of Social Work and Human Resources in 1988, achieved status on the Dean’s List. Her employment career started at the DELCO Blind/Sight Center as a full-time caseworker, with her retiring from the County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA).
Edith was a member of numerous advisory boards and associations. She can be credited with being the first female president of the Rotary Club of Chester, her motto being “A Rotarian’s work is never done”.

Edith enjoyed serving the community, but her biggest accomplishment was her family. She loved to plan family events, luncheons, Hawaiian parties, and shopping trips with the family. The Hilton homestead was always open to all and there was always a kitchen full of snacks and ice cream. She is the founder of the family choir, Generations, which encompasses 4 generations of family singing together.
Edith loved the Lord and was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Chester, PA. She was proud to be a part of the Senior Ministry, Scholarship Ministry, and Women’s Ministry. She also served as the church social worker and Notary Public to Shiloh members. Her favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”.
Edith is preceded in death by siblings Mary Smith, Rev. Margaret DeShields, Katherine Bryant, George Burrell Jr., William Burrell, Robert Burrell, and Laurence Burrell.
She is survived by her husband William Robert Hilton Sr., her 7 children, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, along with a host of nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sibling Dorothy E. Mason. Because of Edith’s giving heart, she also has many adopted sons, daughters, nieces, and nephews, from the church and community.
